Introducing the One and Only David!

David Del Carlo teaches Latin and Literary Subjects at the linguistic and scientific high school. He experiments with new methodologies in his classes, also with the help of ICT, including flipped learning. He has obtained the qualifications of Advanced Flipped Teacher, ThingLink Certified Educator, Book Creator Ambassador, CoSpaces Guru Ambassador, Canvassador and applies the method of the split class, acquired at Impara Digitale.

He combines his teaching activity with that of trainer, with seminars, courses and workshops on flipped classroom, cooperative learning, laboratory teaching, apps and web tools for teaching. In recent years he has dedicated himself to the integration of augmented and virtual reality in teaching and to the experimentation of teaching paths with artificial intelligence. He loves to combine the great classical heritage with new digital technologies, making students experiment, as in a laboratory, with the most innovative apps, for the creation of augmented reality exhibitions or virtual reality tours, together with the deepening of historical, literary and linguistic knowledge, in an ideal combination of tablet and Latin dictionary, VR viewer and textbook.

David’s ThingLink Project

The work on Ovid’s Metamorphoses was born as an experiment in integrating AI-generated content into ThingLink, starting from the scenarios that the students created with Blockade Labs, up to the audio, videos, and talking images, for which they experimented with various generative AI apps. A way to combine great classical literature with the most advanced technologies.

What inspired you to create this project?

My inspiration came from a previous project done in another of my classes: in that case it was another great classic, Boccaccio’s Decameron. I wanted to try to apply the same procedures with different students and with Latin literature.

How was it used in learning?

The project served, first of all, to test the students’ knowledge in relation to the myths narrated by Ovid. The students, who worked in small groups, explored the different aspects of the chosen myth, also identifying references to current events (this is the case, for example, of Medusa, narrated as a violated woman, before her unjust metamorphosis). A contemporary approach to a classic that continues to speak to new generations.

What are you thinking of next?

I plan to use the AR and Scenario modes with students in the next school year… the inspiration will come from the disciplinary content and from the kids themselves, who are an inexhaustible source of ideas.

What do you love about ThingLink?

What I love about ThingLink is its versatility and ease of use, which makes it suitable from primary school to university, but also its ability to adapt to changes and implement new technologies, such as AI.

Fun Facts and Connect with David

Early in my high school career, I’m explaining an author and I notice a girl writing in her diary. I stop. Absolute silence. She looks up and confesses: “I was writing down birthdays”, and I: “What? At least make up an excuse, say you were taking notes…” She: “But I wrote down yours too!”

[Louise’s addition here!] David is also an amazing cook and posts his amazing ‘Pasta Frolla’ creations on his social channels!
